About Nic

Capability is not equally visible in every setting.

I am interested in what happens when a person’s ability, way of thinking and experience meet the conditions in which they are expected to live and work.

Experience and perspective

A job title or polished performance tells you only so much.

Over more than twenty years in international business, I worked with people from a wide range of countries, cultures and professional backgrounds. I saw how differently capability can show up—and how much the setting affects whether it can be used well.

Good work depends on more than individual talent. It also depends on whether a person’s thinking is understood, whether communication works, and whether the job, authority and environment give them enough room to contribute. The same person can be highly effective in one setting and struggle to show what they can do in another.

In recent years, I have developed this experience through executive coaching and specialist training in working with highly capable adults.

What shapes my work

Take the experience seriously without rushing to explain it.

Ability is only one part of the picture. How someone thinks and learns may matter. So may communication, motivation, self-perception, sensitivity, follow-through and the expectations they carry.

I look at a situation from both sides: the person living it and the work, relationships and environment around them. That makes it easier to see what genuinely belongs together and what merely looks as though it has the same cause.

Being highly capable may help explain some experiences. It should not be used to explain everything. Whether it matters in a particular situation remains an open question until the evidence is there.

You do not need to recognise yourself in every description.

A few lines about your situation are enough to begin. We can work out what the question is and whether my approach is likely to help.
